When Private Care Is Needed
by Eileen L Serapio

Getting a private caregiver for your elderly loved one is a hard decision not only for you as a family member but for the patient as well. However, what's harder is how to determine whether caregiving is actually necessary or not. Most elders are apprehensive about letting another person, stranger or not, to take care of them. But as concerned family members, it's our responsibility to make sure that our parents or loved ones are well and taken care of in the best way possible. So how do we know when private care is needed? What are some signs that can help us decide whether or not we should go for caregiving services?

1. Medical Condition

If your loved one has a special medical condition like Alzheimer's or an illness that needs constant monitoring like heart failure or hypertension, then you need someone who can check on your loved one regularly. Patients who suffer from memory loss or confusion will benefit having a caregiver as a companion. When there are medications that should be taken regularly, private care providers can also make sure that these are taken on time.

2. Recent Accidents or Near misses

Home accidents like falling off from a chair or stumbling on a staircase sometimes lead to broken hips or ankles. These injuries make moving around or going through everyday activities harder for our elderly loved ones. When they also tell you about near misses, you should be concerned as well because that just implies that living on their own may not be very safe. Remember that they are not as physically strong as they were like years before and they need another person to be around in case of emergency.

3. Eating Habits

When elderly people suddenly show loss of appetite or a drastic change in their eating habits, then that is something that you should also worry about. It might be a sign of a medical condition or an illness. Whatever it is, they need someone who'll make sure that they will eat meals regularly and that their food is fresh and nutritious. When you check the fridge or cupboard and you see expired or spoiled food, then that is another indication that they may be experiencing trouble managing the house or taking care of themselves.

4. Hygiene

Check or observe your loved one's grooming. When was the last time your father has shaved? Are your parents wearing clean clothes? Are they dressed properly? Are they able to bathe everyday? If you see that they have trouble tidying up or if they are no longer finding it easy to take a bath on their own, then they do need a private care provider.

5. Ability to Walk, Drive or Do Chores

When a family member finds it hard to do physical activities like walking, sitting up or laying in bed by himself, then he needs someone who can assist him in doing so. Elderly people also at a point lose interest in driving or find difficulty in doing chores and running errands. This leads to the problem of who's going to do the grocery, pay the bills or drive to the pharmacy or the doctor. And this is where private care comes in. Home care provides a wide array of services and that also include household management and companion care.

What happens next after making that decision to go for caregiving is to let your loved one or the soon-to-be caree know about it. Remember that it's not going to be easy for them to say yes. The idea that a stranger will stay in their house to take care of them might take a while before it sinks in. So just be respectful of their feelings and let them know why private care is needed in a heartfelt, sincere way.
