Indiana is the smallest state west of the Appalachian Mountains while its capital, Indianapolis, is the largest capital east of the Mississippi. Retirement to Indiana puts you in close proximity to some very different cultures. The state butts up against the southern tip of Lake Michigan and puts its northeast corner on the doorstep of the bustling metropolis of Chicago. At its southern border you find Kentucky and Michigan to its north with Ohio to the east. You've pretty well got a taste of southern, northern, eastern and mid-western culture within a few hours drive. The people here call themselves "Hoosiers" but no one has a clue what it means or where it came from. Prior to Peyton Manning joining the Indianapolis Colts the only people who went to Indianapolis were fans of the Indianapolis 500 motorsports race, the largest one day sporting event (and assemblage of red-necks) in the world.
