The high plains state of North Dakota sits right in the middle of North America. There is a stone marker in Rugby, North Dakota identifying it as the geographic center of North America. The western part of the state consists of the hilly Great Plains and the northern part of the Badlands to the west of Missouri River. The eastern part of the state consists of the Red River Valley and its rich, fertile agricultural lands. North Dakota endures some of the most extreme temperature variations on the planet. The record low for the state is minus 60 degrees and the record high is plus 121 degrees. One might argue that retiring to North Dakota would probably require the close proximity of an elderly wealthy relative with no heirs.
