You want to retire to the most unique state geographically? A West Virginia retirement is for you. The northern panhandle extends adjacent to Pennsylvania and Ohio with the cities of Wheeling and Weirton being just across the border from Pittsburgh while Bluefield is just 70 miles from North Carolina and Harpers Ferry is considered to be part of the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. It is the only state that lies entirely within Appalachia and is considered the most northern southeastern state, the southernmost northeastern state, the westernmost mid-Atlantic state and the easternmost midwestern state. Although it has been stereotyped over the years as populated by backward hillbillies, consider that it is the only state formed by seceding from a confederate state during the civil war and fought with the union against slavery. It is also amazingly beautiful.
